Art

The aim of the Art Department is to provide pupils with an understanding and awareness of visual language, to provide a basic knowledge and application of art and the ability to develop practical skills.

The Department provides Schemes of Work that are varied, demonstrating a wide range of art disciplines and which are under constant review in order to keep up to date with current trends within the art world.

The development of practical skills in two and three dimensional work offers pupils a greater understanding of different mediums used within our projects.

All pupils study Art and Design in Key Stage 3 (one lesson a week) and we aim to instil a solid foundation of knowledge and enjoyment of the subject for those who plan to study Art and Design beyond Year 9.

The Art Department comprises of three large specialist classrooms, one of which contains a sculpture and ceramic area and kiln, and an extended balcony for working outside. We also have a large computer suite containing 30 desktop computers and fifteen laptops and it is in constant use. The computer suite is open twice a week (lunchbreaks) for Art homework club and after school until 4 o’clock most evenings.

During their Art and Design studies pupils will get the opportunity to explore visual and tactile experiences, communicating ideas and meanings. The pupils will build on developing their knowledge of traditional areas such as drawing, painting, graphic design, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, ceramics and cultural and contextual studies.  Digital photography and digital manipulation are also covered as part of our Art curriculum.

Pupils will be experimenting with various materials, techniques and processes and ICT within their work.

Our pupils are provided with opportunities to view the work of other artists through visits by professional artists and craftspeople, as well as visits to off-site galleries and exhibitions.

Key Stage 4 - GCSE Art and Design (AQA)

GCSE Art and Design provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in ways that are both personally relevant and developmental in nature.

This two unit specification enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in the processes of Art and Design – to build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.

Assessment is by Unit 1: Portfolio of Work (Controlled Assessment) 60 per cent and Unit 2: Externally Set Task 40 per cent.

It is a strong foundation for further progression to Art and Design related courses such as A-level Art and Design and enhanced vocational and career pathways.
